Where we are
Lunigiana
an uncontaminated corner of Tuscany
A magical land
Lunigiana, the land of a hundred castles
Lunigiana is an enchanting land rich in history, nature and folklore. Called “the land of a hundred castles”, it offers visitors breathtaking views and the opportunity to visit beautiful villages that still have the atmosphere of the past intact.
Every village and town has a castle or a fortified tower to defend the territory. The history of this land, a fundamental crossroads since before the Middle Ages, is punctuated by struggles for power which often involved important noble families such as the Malaspinas.
Here life flows more slowly, far from city stress. You can relax with long walks surrounded by nature or, if you are a person who loves sport, you can try your hand at mountain biking on one of the many routes present throughout the area.
In addition to beautiful museums, such as that of the stele statues inside the Piagnaro castle in Pontremoli, you will have the opportunity to attend many folkloristic events, festivals and medieval festivals.
During your stay you will be able to discover wonderful hidden corners and be surprised at how this land will give you great emotions.
The Via Francigena
Lunigiana is crossed by the Via Francigena, a route that took pilgrims from Canterbury to Rome. The origins of the Via Francigena date back to medieval times and over the centuries it has continued to be one of the most important communication routes in Europe.
In recent years the stretch that crosses the Lunigiana has been valorised again and has been declared a “Cultural Itinerary of the Council of Europe”. Along the way you will be able to meet pilgrims but also simple people who want to discover the most evocative corners of Lunigiana.
The Via Francigena is dotted with parish churches, castles and suggestive fortified villages that you can visit either on foot or on your bicycle since the stretch that crosses the Lunigiana has been transformed into a cycle-pedestrian route.
Come and visit us and you will be fascinated by a place where time seems to have stopped and where people will welcome you as if you were family.
Not just nature
In Lunigiana, in addition to nature and relaxation, you can find excellent food and many opportunities to visit beautiful museums and historic buildings.
One of the most important museums is that of the stele statues in Pontremoli, inside the Piagnaro castle. The new layout of the rooms, created in collaboration with the Uffizi museum in Florence, will guide you in the discovery of unique finds in the world, typical of Lunigiana and dating back to the Iron Age.
Also noteworthy are the ethnographic museum of Villafranca in Lunigiana, the natural history museum of Aulla located inside the Brunella fortress and the printing museum of Fivizzano.
Parish churches, convents and historic buildings will accompany your visits to practically all the places in Lunigiana. You will be able to appreciate wonderful Baroque buildings with Italian gardens and particularly evocative churches.
Listing all the wonders that Lunigiana offers you is almost impossible, so we are waiting for you to organize an unforgettable holiday for you.
